Soundcloud star Lil Peep has passed away at the age of 21. The rapper, who blended the styles of emo and trap over sample-heavy woozy beats, is believed to have died of an overdose. According to TMZ, Peep was found unresponsive on his tour bus outside of a venue in Tuscon, Arizona by his manager before a scheduled performance.
Born Gustav Åhr, the Long Island rapper came to fame with a series of mixtapes that showcased his unique and highly emotional style. Across a string of tapes and his debut album Come Over When You’re Sober (Part One), Peep openly talked about his struggles with his own mental health and drug addiction.
With that in mind, people around Peep admitted that they were not shocked by the news, even if they were terribly sad.
“I’ve been expecting this call for a year,” wrote manager Chase Orteaga on his Twitter. “Mother f*ck.”
Plenty of Peep’s fellow rappers, collaborators, and friends took to the internet to grieve the up-and-coming star’s death.
“In the short time that i knew you, you were a great friend to me and a great person,” Post Malone said. “Your music changed the world and it’ll never be the same. I love you, bud. Forever.”
Lil peep passing is such a tragedy. I remember hearing him for the first time and being so enthralled,” wrote Charli XCX. “Love to all his family, friends and fans. we have lost something special. R.I.P.”
Producers Diplo and Marshmello both said that the rapper had much more excellent work in him.
“I can’t even believe this. We were just talking last week about working on a song together and now you’re gone. You will be missed, R.I.P,” wrote Marshmello. “Peep was the nicest person. hanging out with him, talking to him about music, the song ideas we were going to do together and touring was so amazing. Everyone will miss you, man.”

Sarah Sennett, CEO of a management company that worked with Lil Peep, issued a statement on his death and forwarded a message from Peep’s family.
“I am shocked and heartbroken. I do not believe Peep wanted to die, this is so tragic. He had big goals and dreams for the future which he had shared with me, his team, his family and his friends. He was highly intelligent, hugely creative, massively charismatic, gentle and charming. He had huge ambition and his career was flourishing.
I have spoken to his mother and she asked me to convey that she is very, very proud of him and everything he was able to achieve in his short life. She is truly grateful to the fans and the people who have supported and loved him.”
Many fans used his death as a rallying point to talk about drug addiction and mental illness, calling on people to talk to their friends and family about their issues before they can’t anymore.
“Tell ur friends u love them, talk to people about ur problems, let ur friends know they’re not alone,” wrote rapper Lil Phag on Twitter. “Lil Peep deserved a happy ending.”
