He's taking full responsibility for his failed marriage
Since joining the season four cast of Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood, we’ve been waiting to get into the mess that is Keyshia Cole and Daniel ‘Booby’ Gibson’s marriage. When episode one of the season premiered last month, everyone wondered why Keyshia and Booby were still living together… especially since Booby’s attention seems to be focused on co-star Brooke Valentine.
In an exclusive VH1 interview, Booby comes clean about what happened when he and Keyshia Cole decided to call it quits and revealed why the former NBA player chose to drown his sorrows in a bottle of Patron, alone in a hotel room!
His side …
Keyshia and the former Cleveland Cavaliers guard began dating in May of 2009 and the two were engaged just eight months later in January of 2010. Prior to their May 2011 wedding, the couple welcomed their first child Daniel Hiram Gibson, Jr. (aka DJ) on March 2, 2010. Four months after their nuptials, the newlyweds renewed their vows in Hawaii… which raised a few eyebrows. It wasn’t without good reason, though, as vow renewals before a one year anniversary are rumored to be bad luck.
And that was definitely the case for these two. In March 2014, Keyshia announced that she and Booby had broken up, after rumors of infidelity surfaced. At that time, the couple was still living together and had not yet filed for divorce.
Fast forward to April 2017 when Keyshia confirmed that they were divorcing, but she still wanted to maintain a relationship for their child. “It’s kind of a strong emotional situation for me because I want my son, DJ, to have everything that I didn’t. So, even though he’s done a lot of things in the marriage that was the ultimate no-no, you know what? It’s not about me and him at this point. My son is 7, he needs his father,” Keyshia said in an interview. She added that Booby, who now wants to pursue a rap career, was having financial issues and that she wanted to help him out until he got on his feet in the hopes that if she one day needed help, he would do the same.
After the breakup, Booby admitted that he regularly lied and cheated during their marriage. He confessed, “I think that life happened. In certain situations, you are a match made in heaven. But at the same time, nothing is perfect, and nobody is perfect. Then in some situations, you aren’t going to be as perfect as some people expect you to be. What happened with me and her was that our relationship was out there for everyone to see. So, whenever we were going through our problems, it became public and everyone saw the ups and downs. With us, I think it was just a matter of us growing apart over time. I can’t say that there was one thing that broke us up, but what I can say as a man. When you are in a relationship, and you say those vows, I take full responsibility for everything that didn’t go right.”
Despite their personal issues, Keyshia continued to maintain a healthy co-parenting relationship for the sake of their son and that is something that has always stood out in Booby’s mind. “Keyshia is ambitious. She’s driven. She’s a fighter. She’s sexy,” he said of his ex. “I felt the most pain. I felt the most vulnerable, I felt humiliated, I felt embarrassed. I felt shame when me and Keysh broke up.”
Ready for Love
Even with all the heartache, Booby still believes in love. “Love is what I do. Love is who I am,” he said, but added that he has no intentions of trying again with Keyshia. He told the interviewer that he thinks the two are better off as friends, and the rest of the world probably agrees.
It is still up in the air whether Booby actually cheated on Keyshia with a stripper, but what can be confirmed is that Booby was not a husband to Keyshia the way he should have been. He confessed in an interview years ago that he was never a good partner to her.
“Let me put it like this. I won’t say that I didn’t cheat, but I will say that I cheated my wife out of a friend in a lot of situations where I was supposed to hold her down and I didn’t. I cheated my wife out of a lot of different things. I feel like when we got together, I thought I was a man, and I thought I had it all figured out but I didn’t. I think I was like 23 when we met, and so a lot of mistakes that you shouldn’t make as a man in a relationship with your wife, I made. So, you can go down the line, I probably made every mistake. The difference between me then and me now is that back then, I probably would have tried to sit here and make an excuse like, ‘oh it was because of her attitude, and it made me go out and cheat on her’. No, that’s a sucker move. That’s for a coward to say. So, I’m sitting here telling you that regardless of what she did, I married her. I loved her. And none of that other stuff should have happened. We’re supposed to still be together doing it right.”
