Sit down, be humble
Born in Compton, Kendrick Lamar Duckworth has been poppin’ since about 2010. Seven years later, he has a net worth of 18 million dollars. The “Humble” artist has been rapping since he was 16 years old, so as far as practice goes, he has a ton. His flow is well-curated, noteworthy and, most importantly, it can’t be imitated.
With over eight million followers on Twitter, Kendrick has a pretty strong fan base. They praise him when he’s done well, and they criticize him when he’s done not so well. With that in mind, K. Dot got an earful from fans after they found out he bought his sister a Toyota Camry for graduation.
After earning himself some local recognition with a mixtape, Kendrick was signed to Top Dawg Entertainment. This indie label, founded in 2004, has been (or still is) home to Schoolboy Q, SZA, Ab-Soul, and more. From there, the only place he could go was up. His internet following grew immensely (and quickly). Collabs with The Game, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg boasted his rep into the sky.
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City
By the time his first major label album released, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, he was untouchable. It not only was number two on the US Billboard 200 (right under Katy Perry’s Witness) but also went platinum.
Needless to say, he was banking some serious change. Which begs the question… When his beloved younger sister Kayla Duckworth graduated, why did she get a Toyota Camry?
A picture of a dark gray Camry with the caption “Graduation gift thank you big brother @kendricklamar ❤️ 2017 Toyota” popped up on young Kayla’s Twitter feed early in the evening on June 2nd. Kayla was so excited to have graduated with her mom, her boyfriend, and her young daughter by her side. She was even more excited — and grateful — to have gotten a shiny, new ride.
Her big brother’s fans were totally unimpressed though.
