The Man Behind the Bling
When Kim Kardashian showed up at the VMAs Sunday night everyone did a double-take at the most recognizable woman, perhaps, in the world. She looked stunning: a sheer black jumper falling of her shoulders, just-out-of-the-shower tumbling wet hair—elegant and seductive. But, while that was nearly all she was wearing, if you took a closer look, between her stunning lady lumps, she had a tastefully trio of Grecian-looking gold necklaces: as if her wayward vessel had been taken down by a squall and Kimmy K mermaid-like swam to the bottom of the ocean to discover a treasure chest of underwater bijoux.
But who is the man behind the jewelry? A figure who has been almost single handedly shaping hip-hop and celebrity jewelry trends for three decades: Jacob Arabo aka Jacob the Jeweler. Kim’s VMA accessories were Jacob’s first collaboration with Kanye, yet Arabo has been power broking celebrity jewelry since the 90s, outfitting and paid tribute to by countless rappers from Missy Elliot to Pharrell.
So let’s take it back to where it all began.
Jacob “the Jeweler” Arabo has outfitted hip-hop legends from Biz Markie and Jay-Z for decades. In 2006, he was indicted by the U.S. government and sent to prison. Is he back?
