Tragedy in KC
On Friday, May 11, a Yo Gotti concert in Kansas City, Missouri had a tragic ending that left one person dead by the end of the night. Yo Gotti was performing a set at the Uptown Theater on Friday when shots were fired at around 11:30 p.m. in a nearby parking lot. Around that time, police received a call informing them that someone had been shot. Police and paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after, only to pronounce the victim dead.
Witnesses claim that a fight had broken out, and in the middle of the fight, someone pulled out a fired a gun. In a Fox4KC report, it is reported that police say the fight had started in the concert and spilled into the parking lot. It remains unclear if all the people who were involved in the fight had attended the concert, but there exists a strong possibility that the two events are related in some way. Although reports claim that only one person died that night, Dwayne Bowe says that two lives were lost.
MoneyBo Weighs In
Dwayne Bowe, former NFL wide receiver and current rapper (MoneyBo) who performed with Yo Gotti that night, expressed his frustration with the violence that took place in a video he posted to Instagram:
Great show man, killed the show… But the stupid s**t gotta stop, man. Two people got killed, man. That s**t crazy. It was an awesome show, man, shout out KC. We gotta do better, black people. We gotta look out for each other.
Birthday Bash 6
As for Gotti, he’s stayed quiet about the shooting on his social media accounts. It’s not surprising, considering that Yo Gotti keeps most of the content on his social media accounts business related. Aside from a mother-appreciation post he posted on Mother’s Day, Yo Gotti has shared pictures of his recent performance at Florida’s Rolling Loud Music Festival, as well as advertised his upcoming birthday bash.
The birthday bash, advertised as “Birthday Bash 6”, will be held at the FedEx Forum in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. This will be the sixth annual Birthday Bash that Yo Gotti has hosted. In the past, special guests have included Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, Rich Homie Quan, DeJ Loaf, and others. The date of Birthday Bash 6 is set for June 28th, but it should be noted that Gotti’s actual birthday is May 19, when he’ll be turning 37 years old.
Yo Gotti’s last project, titled I Still Am was released back in October 2017. Since then, Gotti has maintained a relatively low-key profile, but has kept up appearances by popping up as a feature on a few tracks. Specifically, Yo Gotti has featured on Destructo’s “Loaded”, E-40’s “Straight Out the Dirt,” Lil Xan’s “Betrayed (Remix)” and G-Eazy’s “1942”. Gotti has also featured on tracks of label mates Moneybagg Yo and Blac Youngsta in the past yeay, as well.
Even though Yo Gotti hasn’t been putting out a ton of new music lately, he already has a pretty illustrious career. Born Mario Mims, Gotti started rapping at the age of 14, going by the name Lil Yo. After releasing his first album on cassette tape back in 1996, Yo Gotti released a total of four independent albums from 2000 to 2006, the lastest of which being Back 2 da Basics. From the beginning of his career to now, Yo Gotti has released nine studio albums, 22 mixtapes and 25 singles.
