He was 48 years old
Drumma Boy’s brother was shot over the weekend and succumbed to his injuries shorty after. According to Atlanta police, Miles Ferrell was shot in front of his brother’s boutique in northwest Atlanta.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that first-responders found Ferrell with a shotgun on his person. Witnesses said that the shooting took place after a heated argument turned violent. The shooter left the scene in a black sedan.
Ferrell, 48, was rushed to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. Drumma Boy confirmed that the victim was, in fact, his brother in a tribute post to Instagram. Along with old photos of his family, the producer explained how important his older sibling was to him.
“I lost the first person I ever looked up too in life… the first person I ever wanted to be like… My BIG blood-brother… 💉 My dad showed me the fundamentals of music & music theory, but my brother introduced me to making beats. He paved the way for me, introduced me to everybody he could, continuously bragged about me and gave me an alternative route to take. I always just wanted to see him smile and be proud of the moves I made as well as the moves we made together. Thank you all for the condolences sent for @ensaynewayne and family. #LegendsLiveForever #RIP #EnsayneWayne”
Drumma Boy is 14 years his brother’s junior, so his big bro had fully formed tastes to share with the producer when he was a kid. Clearly pointing him down that path had an effect, as Drumma Boy has had his fingers on huge hits this century.
He produced the beat for Birdman’s Drake-featuring hit “Money To Blow” and Jeezy’s “Put On.” While he had mega-hits with T.I. and others in the late ‘00s, he’s really ramped up his production in this decade.
A Bad Year
It’s been a bad year for rappers and their families. Drumma Boy’s brother’s murder caps off a half-year that saw 30 Glizzy and Doughboy Roc killed, while Eastside Peezy was shot during a robbery.
Roc was found dead in his car in his own neighborhood, having been shot in the head. According to local news radio outlet WWJ, the slaying shocked the neighborhood.
“Everybody was so surprised,” an unnamed resident told the station. “They couldn’t believe that someone they knew from the neighborhood, who also is famous and young, had been found dead in his car.”
Baton Rouge rapper Gee Money was also killed near his home in Baton Rouge. The young up-and-coming rapper was found shot in a parking lot and people who knew he was going somewhere expressed regret over his passing.
“Rapping was his heart,” local activist Arthur “Silky Slim” Reed told The Advocate. ”Rapping was definitely his love.”
“It’s sad to see such a young, vibrant individual’s [life] cut so short,” Reed added. “I’m just praying for his family, and, that his life will save someone else’s life that’s on the same track.”
Peezy, however, managed to walk away from being shot during a robbery. The rapper was involved in an altercation at a Citgo gas station after being mugged by an armed assailant.
“The victim said that he had stopped at the Citgo gas station,” Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer told The Detroit News. “An unknown black male approached the passenger door, pointed a gun and demanded his money. He handed over the cash, which he had apparently received from his rapping. He was then shot multiple times.”
