Should we care?
Desiigner is the latest rapper who has to fight one of the grosser subsections of hip-hop fandom. After a video of the rapper dancing with transgender woman Sidney Starr became meme fodder, the rapper had to push back against people trying to trash talk him for dancing with the trans woman.
Unfortunately, it looks like Desiigner holds similarly regressive views about the trans community — at least that’s what we’re getting from this defense video he posted to social media.
“Now they trying to make a joke of me, you know what I’m saying? Put these videos up,” he said. “I didn’t even know that was a f*cking dude. We were at a party, man. They came up to me. I’m celebrity, man. Get your clout, man. Get your clout off that sh*t.
Banner Year For Transphobes
Desiigner’s defense echoes one put forward by Bobby V and Lil Scrappy after the same bunch of mouth-breathers came for them when they believed a woman who was hanging with the pair might have been transgender.
Scrappy told his fans that he would never let his guard down around a trans woman.
“I know the difference, cuz,” he said. “I ain’t no sucka.”
Scrappy distanced himself from Bobby while still maintaining that V did nothing wrong.
“I don’t know cuz situation, what he like what he don’t like,” he said. “I ain’t never did all that. I just made music with homie. And I ain’t over here trying to talk down on another man and put myself on a pedestal,” he added.
And that’s not even the worst transphobic rant we’ve heard this year. Lil Duval went so far as to say that he’d kill a woman if he found out that she was born with male genitalia after they had gotten together.
In an interview with The Breakfast Club, DJ Envy asked him what he would do if he found out a woman he was sleeping with was actually transgender.
He answered, “This might sound messed up, and I don’t care… she dyin.’”
And he wasn’t cowed by the backlash. Duval doubled down when cornered about his remarks by TMZ.
“I’m trying to figure out do y’all see why I said what I said. Like what made me say that? I said that because they were saying taking away someone’s power of choice, and that’s what you did. When you take away somebody’s power of choice it should be criminal. And you don’t know what it will do to somebody psychologically. I don’t got no problem with transgenders. I ain’t got no problem with gay people. I got a problem with somebody trying to take something from me! I’m in my own mind. I say what I feel. I say what’s on my mind, and how they take it.”
He continued saying that people were taking it out of context. and “that’s on them.” He proceeded to put his misunderstanding of trans identities on display in his big finish: “Because this is only about one situation. Which the situation was what would I do if I found out somebody was a man that I thought was a woman, and they didn’t tell me. That’s all that is!”
