The Dipset reunion is really happening!
Dipset are officially reuniting! Though it seemed impossible for a full-on Diplomats show to happen, given the nature of Cam’ron and Jim Jones’ relationship, it looks like the pair is willing to squash it for the fans.
Cam and Jones have been beefing since the end of the ‘00s, but Spotify waved their magic wand — and, let’s be honest, a whole lot of money — to bring the Harlem crew back together for one of their Rap Caviar shows. The streaming giant is hosting six shows across the U.S. for their concert series named after their much-vaunted and extremely influential rap playlist. The New York iteration will feature famous Big Apple crews past and present, as The Diplomats will be joined by A$AP Mob in that city’s Hammerstein Ballroom.
The show seems like a bit of a torch-passing, with the crew of younger rappers who were no doubt influenced by Dipset’s early ‘00s domination of rap radio in New York and beyond sharing a stage with their idols. It should be a hell of a lot of fun to watch and fans will get the chance to buy in this Friday.
The turnaround is surprising given how Jones was talking about Cam just last year. An interview with Hot 97 revealed that things have been strained for quite a while.
“For the most part, me and Cam always had a strange relationship. Not in the beginning — in the beginning, we was like two peas in a bucket, f*ck it. As time goes and you get money and you’re that young with so much power and nobody over you telling you what you should be doing, how you should be moving, you tend to separate. Money makes you your own man, especially when you make a sh*tload of it,” he explained.
Jim added that Cam cut him out of merchandise and records. He recounted how he found out his verse had been left off of the song “Oh Yeah.”
“Somebody called me and was talking to me about the record and was like, ‘Yo, you know he took your verse off that record?’ Because I didn’t hear the record — I just thought it was a Juelz and Killa record, respect, that’s Dipset all day. But then I was like, ‘What? Somebody pull the record up, lemme hear what record this is.’ And, lo and behold, it was the record I had jumped on. So, you know, when y’all ask about Diplomat records, there are Diplomat records [in existence]. Somehow, I’m not making the cut.”
It’s not surprising that Cam might have been stingy given how he nearly went broke before signing to Roc-A-Fella. He revealed that he was nearly penniless when he signed on with Jigga and Dame Dash in a recent interview.
“After two albums I was pop,” he said in an interview with MReck TV.
Apparently, Cam had found a way to scrounge up $10K to keep himself going but he very nearly lost that. “I was in front of Baseline [studios]. I lost the $10,000 check,” Cam revealed. “Yo, we in front of the studio, I’m dead pop, I just signed to Roc-A-Fella, but I’m dead pop. I done gambled, did all type of shit, I’m dead pop. I found [an] Ohio lick though, but I got a check out the blue for 10,000. I lost it.”
The show goes down on November 21. Tickets will be made available here.
