Where's the album at?
August Alsina hasn’t had a new album in quite a while, but it’s not for lack of trying. The singer recently turned to Twitter to call out his label for shelving his most recent project.
Alsina hopes to pressure Def Jam into releasing his music and has spent the last day retweeting angry fans who want to get their hands on some new music from the “I Luv This Sh*t” singer.
Alsina kicked off the wave of fan anger with a screed against his label on Twitter.
“I would love to put my album out but DEF JAM is holding it/me hostage because the system is not up & running until next year so they basically dont exist. The label is just TRASH .. I will release free music soon but that has been the hold up. Tell Them to FREE ME & the Album”
An Uphill Battle
Since dropping that bomb, Alsina has amplified the reaction of his fans via retweets, some of whom wrote their own paragraphs to the label. Plenty of people argued that after the year we’ve all lived through, releasing some new August Alsina is the least that Def Jam can do.
“Because at this point we all been through the struggle this year and @AugustAlsina help a lot of us cope with it but HOW if y’all won’t free bae?” wrote Twitter user @JustNanaa. “WE NEED HIS MUSIC & FREEDOM NOW!! @DefJamRecords #freeaugustalsina #hedeservesbetter.”
The fact that Alsina was able to overcome his own struggles to make the album makes it being withheld even more egregious. While Alsina has never named his illness, he suffers from a chronic autoimmune disorder that led him to fall into a coma several years ago. He has to battle the illness every day but he managed to put the release together nonetheless.
He said of his disease in an interview with Jada Pinkett Smith:
“I have a liver disease. My autoimmune system is fighting itself. The reality is that I’m sick all the time. I don’t really like to talk about it because I’m not looking for anybody’s sympathy. Don’t treat me like I’m a f**kin’ cancer patient — because I’m not. I’m sicker than ever & having a hard time accepting what I feel & what the Doctors are saying is most true. After sitting down and talking with my father’s mother and sister. They explained to me that sickness & illness runs in my family.”
Though both his father and grandfather died of a similar illness, Alsina said he uses them as inspiration to do as much as he possibly can.
“My father & grandfather both died of severe illness, but they were FIGHTERS & that’s all that matters,” he said. “Just ride with me is all I ask.”
Alsina has vowed to release some free music for his fans as a way to work around Def Jam’s roadblock, but that’s little solace to fans who have been waiting for a proper album for three years.
What do you think? Will Alsina’s gambit work? Is Def Jam going to fast-track his release now that August is applying the pressure? Will they drop him over this stunt? Let us know if you’re ready for new Alsina in the comments and be sure to SHARE this article.
