Can you believe it’s been 15 years since Aaliyah died? On August 25, 2001, the singer along with eight other passengers were killed in a plane crash in Marsh Harbour, Bahamas. Aaliyah and her crew just finished filming her video, “Rock the Boat,” and were heading back to the states when the small cessna plane crashed just minutes after takeoff.
I’ll never forget that day. I had just gotten to a friend’s house after a big high school football game and saw the news scrolling at the bottom of MTV. I was in total shock and didn’t believe it. It wasn’t until I woke up the next day and saw Kurt Loder breaking the news on MTV News. God, I’m old. But that was very hard time for me. I had looked up to Aaliyah since she came on the scene with her 1994 debut, “Back & Forth.” Though she’s gone, her music still lives on. No matter how may years have passed, if an Aaliyah song comes on the airwaves, you’re bound to crank it up.
15 years after her death, we remember her life that ended way too soon.
