After watching the demise of Prince, the hip hop community now has to spend another day in dismay. Early Tuesday morning, former Black Panthers activist and the mother of slain rap star, Tupac Shakur, Afeni Shakur, passed away at 69. She was taken to the hospital after experiencing “physical discomfort” in her Sausalito, Calif. home. She was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m.
The muse behind Tupac’s iconic record “Dear Mama” has played an integral part in the late icon’s life, by constantly feeding avid fans more music, despite his untimely death in 1996. Shakur restlessly made sure her son’s legacy was tastefully maintained and cultivated new avenues to socially aware people of his past deeds.
Tupac spoke candidly about his mom’s arduous struggle with addiction and her courageous outlook on life when he rapped, “And even as a crack fiend, mama / You always was a black queen, mama.” Take a look at some intimate photos taken of the two, as we pray that both mother and son can finally rest together in power.
